The Community Market Garden is situated in West Watford on a large site of about an acre.
In addition to our growing plots, three polytunnels and a wooded area, we have two large inside spaces: the workshop and the yurt. Our diverse spaces allow us to run many different activities and also provide alternative working spaces for when the weather is cold or wet.
We see many visitors from local schools, corporate groups, volunteer groups and the general public (on our open days) but the heart of what we do is our work with service users who are homeless or vulnerably-housed. We offer holistic support to help them to lead fulfilling and independent lives. To do this the Community Market Garden offers a wide variety of activities, and the team works closely with service users to help them find an activity which suits them.
The garden offers opportunities to get involved with traditional gardening jobs, such as planting, weeding, digging and harvesting. Other activities include woodwork (carving, bird boxes, bug boxes, walking sticks), art, sewing, knitting, willow sculptures, music, craft and creative re-use, bush-craft, creative writing, poetry and storytelling. The team also encourage service users to develop their own creative projects. We also run regular Fireside sessions addressing issues and holding discussion on issues such as ‘Keeping healthy in the winter.’
