Help make a difference this winter: Volunteer with Watford Winter Shelter

As temperatures drop, the need for warmth, safety, and human connection becomes even more vital. The Watford Winter Shelter - a lifeline for people facing homelessness during the coldest and cruellest months - is returning from 17th November 2025 to 15th March 2026.

Funded by Watford Borough Council and run by New Hope, the shelter offers emergency accommodation and hot meals for up to 15 guests each night, giving them a safe space and a sense of dignity during the toughest time of year.

Last year 41 volunteers helped at the winter shelter over 123 nights. That’s an amazing 1,476 volunteer hours to help keep 85 homeless people safe, warm and well fed.

One volunteer said: “It was truly humbling to speak to those experiencing homelessness and to realise how easily anyone can find themselves in the same position.

“The relentless positivity, and joy in the ‘small stuff’, showed by so many of the people we took care of was heart-warming.”

We're now calling on compassionate, reliable evening and weekend volunteers to be part of this life-changing work.

What you’ll do

As a volunteer, you’ll help create a welcoming, respectful environment by:

  • Setting up the space for our guests’ arrival

  • Greeting and engaging with guests throughout the evening

  • Preparing and serving hot drinks and food

  • Clearing tables, washing up, and cleaning

  • Communicating with staff, sharing relevant updates

  • Looking out for everyone’s health and safety

  • Attending a training session before the shelter opens

Who we’re looking for

You must be:

  • 18 or over

  • Able to volunteer regularly throughout the shelter period

  • Be calm under pressure, confident working independently and in a team

  • Be comfortable following guidelines and handling sensitive situations with respect and care

This is more than just a volunteer role, it’s a chance to be a steady and personable presence for someone who may be facing some of the darkest days of their life.
