Polly recognised in King's Birthday Honours!
The much-loved manager of the New Hope charity shop in Queens Road, Watford, Polly Odbert, has been recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours for her outstanding service to the community.
Polly has been awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM) - this award is for sustained commitment in support of very local charitable and voluntary activity.
Polly has dedicated more than three decades to New Hope! For the past 20 years she has served as manager of the Watford shop (on a voluntary basis), becoming a familiar and reassuring presence to generations of customers, volunteers and those supported by New Hope.
Under Polly’s leadership, the shop has grown into a vital hub for the community, raising essential funds to support people facing homelessness and hardship across Watford. Her commitment, warmth and tireless work ethic have inspired countless volunteers and helped sustain the charity’s mission over many years, helping raise thousands of pounds.
Colleagues describe Polly as the “heart and soul” of the shop, known for her kindness, resilience and unwavering dedication. Even after decades of service, she remains actively involved in the day-to-day running of the shop, continuing to greet customers with enthusiasm and care.
Matthew Heasman, Chief Executive, said: “Polly’s contribution to New Hope and the wider community is truly remarkable. For over 30 years she has given her time, energy and compassion to support others. This honour is richly deserved, and we are incredibly proud of her.”
Dr Tim Robson OBE, trustee and founder of New Hope, said: “Over the years Polly has been consistently energetic and inspirational in leading and managing all aspects of the shop and her team of fellow volunteers. She never gives up and is persistent in working beyond the call of duty, looking out for others.
“She radiates energy and compassion and is always looking for practical opportunities to support customers, whatever their needs.”
