Watford Winter Shelter Volunteer
Hours: Four hours, from 6pm to 10pm - we mainly need volunteers to cover Monday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings.
Frequency: At least once per month
Location: The Haven, West Watford
The Watford Winter Shelter is an essential service (funded by Watford Borough Council and run by New Hope) to provide emergency accommodation for people experiencing homelessness in the cold and wet winter months. Running from 17th November 2025 to 15th March 2026, the WWS will provide food and basic accommodation to a maximum of 15 people.
New Hope is looking for evening volunteers to provide support for the duration of the Watford Winter Shelter. The role involves:
Helping set up the room, ready for people to arrive
Welcoming people and engaging with them throughout the evening, treating them with respect, dignity, privacy, and individuality
Preparing and serving hot drinks and food
Clearing tables, cleaning, and washing up
Liaising and cooperating with staff and sharing relevant information
Observing the overall health and safety of oneself and people accessing the shelter
Attending an induction and training session prior to the start of the Watford Winter Shelter
Volunteers must be aged 18 years or older; be able to commit to a regular schedule of volunteering, and handle pressure well. They should be happy to undertake tasks independently and as part of a team and be able to follow instructions, operating within a set of guidelines.
