World Homeless Day: Small actions, real change
On Saturday, October 10, people around the world will mark World Homeless Day - an opportunity to raise awareness of homelessness and, importantly, to consider what we can all do to help create a world where everyone has a safe and secure place to call home.
Homelessness is about far more than sleeping on the streets. People can experience homelessness for many different reasons, including rising housing costs, relationship breakdown, unemployment, domestic abuse, poor mental health, or simply being unable to find an affordable home. Behind every statistic is a person with their own story, hopes and ambitions.
World Homeless Day gives us a chance to look beyond the headlines and think about how you can support New Hope’s aspirations for those experiencing homelessness, with compassion and practical action.
How can you mark World Homeless Day?
Learn and share. Take some time to learn about homelessness in Watford. Read about the causes, challenges and support available, then share reliable information with friends, family or colleagues. Starting a conversation can help challenge misconceptions and stigma.
Support a local organisation. Many charities and community groups, like New Hope, provide food, clothing, accommodation, advice and other essential services to those experiencing homelessness. Consider making a donation, or volunteering your time.
Put together a care package. Winter is fast approaching so why not put together a care package of useful items such as toiletries, warm socks, gloves, snacks and other essentials?
Organise a community activity. A sponsored walk, coffee morning, collection, quiz or other fundraising event can bring people together while raising money and awareness.
Show kindness. If you encounter someone experiencing homelessness, remember that they are a person first. A friendly greeting, respectful conversation or offering appropriate help can make a difference. If you are concerned about someone sleeping rough, contact New Hope’s 24/7 helpline on 0300 012 0168. If they are a child, or in immediate danger, call the police.
Most importantly, World Homeless Day reminds us that tackling homelessness is not only the responsibility of charities like New Hope or councils and governments. Communities, businesses and individuals all have a role to play.
This October 10, let's use the day not simply to think about homelessness, but to take one small, positive step towards a future where everyone has somewhere safe to call home.
